Africa: solar energy is changing scale and reshaping the continent’s development prospects

Africa is entering a new phase in its energy history. By 2026, the continent could install up to 17 GW of solar capacity, an increase of 45% in one year. Behind this figure lies a strategic evolution: solar energy is no longer the sole responsibility of the electricity sector and has become a direct lever for economic and social transformation.

One of the most important signals is the geographical spread of this growth. South Africa, long dominant in panel imports, is said to account for less than 1/5 of new installations. 36 out of 54 countries reached a record level. This multiplication of markets reflects a gradual appropriation of solar energy by economies with very different profiles.

The stakes are particularly high in areas where the electricity grid remains limited. Solar rooftops, batteries, commercial systems and mini-grids provide households, businesses and rural communities with access to more consistent electricity. For agriculture, irrigation, product preservation, workshops, shops or digital services, this energy availability can concretely change production capacities.

The 23 TWh expected from the new installations could cover an annual increase in African demand comparable to that observed over the last decade. Solar energy thus provides a rapid response to an energy pressure that is still slowing down the industrialization of several countries.

However, a weakness remains: about 94% of the modules installed come from China. Africa is therefore increasing its electrical capacity without sufficiently mastering the industrial chain. The new production units in Egypt and Tanzania are a first step towards greater sovereignty.

The real challenge for the next few years lies there: transforming the solar boom into an African industry, creating skilled jobs, developing skills and retaining more value on the continent. On this condition, the African sun can become a sustainable driver of development, industrialization and energy autonomy.
