Thanks to Togo’s proposal, the United Nations General Assembly adopted an African resolution to « correct the map » of the world, with overwhelming support: 164 votes in favor, 1 against (the United States), and 6 abstentions.
This vote consecrates an unprecedented continental mobilization and places Africa at the heart of a symbolic and geopolitical reform of global cartography.
It embodies Togo’s proactive diplomacy, led by Minister Robert Dussey, under the impetus of President Faure Gnassingbé, who was able to transform a demand for cartographic justice into a UN resolution with a broad consensus.
Beyond the cartographic technique, this resolution is a strong political act: it reaffirms the dignity of the African continent and corrects a bias inherited from colonization. It sends a clear message: Africa is no longer asking for permission to occupy its true place in the world, it is taking it back.
Thus, Togo and President Faure Gnassingbé offer Africa an educational, cultural and geopolitical tool.
