At the end of June 2026, Togo had a public debt ratio of 60.2% of GDP, compared to 62.8% six months earlier. This net decline of 2.6 points in the space of six months illustrates a clear-headed, methodical and vigorous fiscal approach. Togo thus settles very comfortably below the community ceiling of 70% at the WAEMU level, striking proof of governance under control.
This remarkable performance stems from the vitality of the production system. The expansion of nominal GDP, with a net increase of around 7.8%, far outpaced the evolution of the total outstanding. Even if the absolute value of the debt reaches 4,458.1 billion CFA francs, the creation of national wealth is progressing at a much faster pace. The State’s policy is based on solid foundations, in line with a growth outlook of 6.3% for the whole of 2026.
The structure of financial commitments is undergoing a particularly favorable reshuffle. The authorities are drastically reducing short-term debt, from 216.3 to 128 billion CFA francs, to favor long maturities. This intelligent recomposition protects public resources in the face of the uncertainties of the international economy. In the same vein, the overall budget deficit fell dramatically to 0.8% of GDP, compared to 2.4% a year earlier.
This great rigor does not paralyze the real economy; it breathes new energy into it. The government is redirecting financial effort towards the vital sectors of the nation. The agricultural sector recorded an exceptional jump of 83.3% in bank loans, with a volume of 15.4 billion CFA francs. Very small, small and medium-sized enterprises in turn benefit from this major impetus, a central lever for local entrepreneurship.
The outlook is even more promising with the imminent rebasing of the national accounts by the end of 2026. This technical update will reveal the full size of the Togolese economic fabric and will mechanically reduce the pressure of debt ratios. Lomé confirms its status as a model of public management and confidently charts the path to sustainable development.
